Southeast Chicago Area Wide Plan

Southeast Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Park District, with support from US EPA, engaged The Lakota Group to assist with the development of an Area -Wide Plan focusing on nine southeast-Chicago open space sites: Park 564 (Big Marsh), Park 566 (USX), Steel Workers Park, Park 562 (Van Vlissingen Pra irie), Indian Ridge Marsh, Hegewisch Marsh, Whitford Pond / O’Brien Lock, Mittal Woods, and Lake Calumet. The goal of this project is to develop an updated, comprehensive, and achievable strategy for a connected network of ecological and recreational resources in southeast Chicago. The outcome of this study was the development of a comprehensive plan that:

  • Considers, integrates, and celebrates accomplishments and outcomes of past Calumet-area planning efforts.
  • Develops a community-supported vision for southeast Chicago as a connected region of strong neighborhoods and a destination for visitors.
  • Outlines strategies for land use and transportation improvements that result in the implementation of a connected network of ecological, cultural, and recreational resources with easy local and regional access.
