One of our more unique projects we’ve been working on for the past year or so has been in Dubuque, Iowa with the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Sisters asked that Lakota help develop a plan that would preserve their 108-acre campus in ways that align with their values as they face an aging population. Our work has consisted of helping them establish priorities and using those priorities to develop a Mt. Carmel Campus Master Plan and a proposed Planned Unit Development (PUD). Although at this time the Sisters have no plans to sell any of their property or buildings, this custom-designed PUD zoning district would protect this beautiful and historic piece of property from future overdevelopment and inappropriate uses, would be sensitive to the needs of the neighbors, and would provide a basis for continuing collaboration with the City.
